Project code: DFG SFB 670
Contract period: 01.01.2006 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Basic research

Mikroorganisms that reach the sterile sections of higher organisms are usually quickly ingested by phagocytes (e.g., macrophages), are killed and degraded. Some specialised pathogens, e.g., bacteria of the species Rhodococcus equi can, however, reprogram the defense apparatus soon after their ingestion, so that they are not confronted with the killing and degradation machinery of the macrophage. It is the subject of this research project to identify bacterial factors that are required for this behaviour, to identify the macrophage factors with which they interact and to analyse how macrophages can, under some circumstances, still eliminate rhodococci.
