Project code: 0315530A
Contract period: 01.10.2009 - 30.09.2014
Budget: 4,368,999 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

For analysis of special parameters in plant breeding sensor-systems can be a very effective tool due to the fact that labor can be reduced significantly and information on the plants is delivered in a qualitative and quantitative way. While plenty of systems are available for above-soil plant parts, there are only a few systems (CT, MRT) available for in-soil plant parts which are generally expensive and time intensive. Within the research network “CROP.SENSe.net” a sensor-system based on Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) RADAR is being developed which allows analysis of in soil plant parts (e.g. sugar beets) in a non destructive way under greenhouse conditions (plant pots). This system based on a bistatic 0.9 to 9 GHz UWB-RADAR was mounted to a scanner-system with a linear and circular drive for positioning of the antennas. This configuration is, compared to other systems, meant to be a fast and valuable way of root-crop analysis in the cm-range.
