Purpose of research: Basic research

To keep nematode populations at tolerable densities several factors (crop rotation, variety, intercropping) have to be taken into account simultaneously in order to avoid yield losses or increased resource input. Soil samples from large areas are economically not practical. The objective of this project is to test the feasibility of whether the soil abundance of the nematode can be derived from relative differences within the leaf canopy. These relative changes can occur in June/July of the growing season. Hyperspectral measurements will be taken in this period at varying levels (leaf diameter, above canopy, airborne) and the resulting signatures correlated with the initial population densities. Within the Heterodera schachtii – Beta vulgaris system any canopy or morphological differences are not only a function of nematode density, but also are masked by the dynamics of both systems with respect to temperature and variety. The complexity of the system is covered by related modelling approaches and will be merged with hyperspectral sensor information.
