Collaborative project: Animal Response Ventilation - Development of a climate controller to avoid heat and coldness stress and proof the well-beeing of pigs - Subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2813700410
Contract period: 01.10.2010
- 31.01.2013
Budget: 95,585 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The objective of this project was to improve animal welfare in pig farming. Therefore a drinking system in combination with a climate control system was developed. The system was able to record the water intake of weaned pigs, fattened pigs and sows as well as the stable temperature. Independent of the stable temperature the animal preferred drinking the cold water. At a variation stable temperature of >5°C the drinking behavior of the animals changed significantly. Especially at high ambient temperatures the animals showed reacted by drinking more cold water. In order to response on the animal water intake behavior, the measured water consumption at each drinker was set into relation to each other. Based on this relationship a dynamic average of the last 24 hours was developed. By this a recommendation can be derived concerning the adjustment of stable temperature. This recommendation is displayed to the farmer. The behavior of the animal groups varied between repetitions. A distinctly signal processing wasn´t possible at any time for each group. For this reason a situational signal processing with decision making by the farmer should be possible.
