Development of an oral application technique for the antibody-induced growth promotion in aquaculture
Project
Project code: 2813800210
Contract period: 01.01.2011
- 31.08.2014
Budget: 145,749 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The project aimed at establishing an oral application method for the passive IgY immunization against somatostatin-14 (SS-14) for improved growth performance and food conversion in gastric trout. Even at a 200-fold higher dosis compared to the intraperitoneal injection (0.0076 mg IgY g BW-1 day-1) no instestinal uptake of IgY was detected in the short time experiments (36 h). Neither uptake enhancers (Tween 20, Sodium deoxycholate und Vitamin E TPGS) nor pH protective supplement (NaHCO3) improved IgY uptake significantly. The final feeding trial (8 weeks) revealed significantly improved food conversion, protein efficiency ratio and protein retention compared to the fishmeal control in carp. In trout, no effects on growth performance nor on feed conversion were observed. Furthermore, the antibodies were faster degraded in trout than in carp, turning application in aquaculture even more realistic.
