Characterisation of Campylobacter lari strains
Project
Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-445
Contract period: 01.04.2010
- 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research
The genus Campylobacter comprises 18 species and since 1990 the species Campylobacter lari is included which contribute to the human pathogene species of Campylobacter. The differentiation of C. lari is based on the biochemical characteristics positive for katalase and negative for hippurate- and indol acetate-hyrolysis as well as on the amplification of the C. lari serine hydroxymethyltransferase gyrA by PCR. The C. lari species compromise a geno- and phenotypic heterogenous group. New scientific insight results into the classification of the formerly C. lari species in the two species Campylobacter peloridis sp. nov. and Campylobacter lari subsp. concheus subsp. nov. as well as Campylobacter lari subsp. lari subsp. nov..The methods to discriminate the two new species should be established and approx. 50 C. lari wild type stains should be analysed.
