Analysis of the variability of antibiotic resistance profiles in Campylobacter

Antibiotic resistances in Campylobacter are regularly monitored by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. However, research is necessary concerning the determinants for resistances in Campylobacter. In particular, the variability and stability of the resistances are largely unknown. For example clinically relevant substances, such as fluoroquinolones and erythromycin are important. But also resistances against streptomycin are of high relevance, since previous work has shown that they are accompanied by further resistance determinants. The focus of this work was set on i) streptomycin resistance in C. jejuni and C. coli; ii), the analysis of Campylobacter isolates with untypical reaction against (fluoro-)quinolones and iii) genotyping and stability of erythromycin resistant Campylobacter.
In this project, comprehensive data about the stability of resistances in Campylobacter coli and C. jejuni isolates were established. For this purpose, the stability of the resistance against erythromycin in isolates from turkey was characterized along the food chain. In addition, putative resistance mechanisms against streptomycin and the stability of the resistance against (fluoro-)quinolones was subject of the investigations. The results will be useful for further research on antibiotic resistance variability and persistence in order to have a more profound basis for the evaluation of the resistance situation and its alterations in Campylobacter isolates from animals and food.
