Advanced Monitoring of Tree Crops for Optimized Management - How to Cope With Variability in Soil and Plant Properties?
Project
Project code: 2810ERA095
Contract period: 01.05.2011
- 31.07.2013
Budget: 127,400 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The project targets at the development of an information and communication technology (ICT) system for precision irrigation of the economical most relevant tree crops apple and citrus. Through 3D-Mosaic the yield, product quality and water consumption shall be optimized. The approach of 3D-Mosaic is based on adjusted monitoring methods based on 2D and 3D image processing and spectral analysis with data acquisition directly in the plantation. Due to site specific data recording the mosaic structure of the soil and plants can be detected. For this purpose sensors, monitoring strategies, information processing and decision support systems will be developed which together will allow for the computation of irrigation maps. The project is structured into six work packages:
1. Adaptation of an autonomous platform for transport of the mobile sensors and for implementation of efficient monitoring strategies
2. Development of a mobile image analysis system for detection of trees and fruits
3. Development of mobile fruit sensors for non-invasive fruit quality determination on the tree
4. Field trials for testing the system and data acquisition
5. Geographical information system for 3D data management
6. Development of a decision support system to generate irrigation maps.
