Analysis and evaluation of the actual state and development options of forage production and animal nutrition in organic farming - Topical Network Animal Nutrition in Organic Farming

Project

Project code: 2803OE475F
Contract period: 01.01.2006 - 30.04.2008
Budget: 58,180 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

The workshop dealt with the analysis and description of the present situation of feed production and animal nutrition in organic farming, taking into particular consideration the EU Regulation 2092/21 of August 2005. The participants in the workshop, practitioners, advisers, representatives of feed producers and scientists, also discussed the need for action and research in this area of farming. An extensive literature assessment with respect to the '100% organic feeding' of poultry, pigs and cattle was presented in addition to information about current and completed research projects. Specialist questions concerning the nutrition of poultry, pigs and cattle were discussed in three separate working groups. Further laboratory analysis and physiological investigations on the digestive tract with respect to feed evaluation, taking special consideration of intestinal microbiology regarding nutrient utilisation (particularly amino acids), immunofunction and infective processes, are required with respect to both the species-rich pastures resulting from organic farming and the fundamentally roughage-rich nutrition of monogastric farm animals. Animal genotype / feed interactions are at present mostly not known, but they must be more closely investigated with respect to the use of suitable animal lines in organic farming. Possibilities of feed technology for feed improvement need to be investigated, too. The association between feed and product quality should be emphasised more, though as yet appropriate criteria are still in need of definition. A suitably efficient method for the 100% organic feeding of rearing pigs has not been solved till now. Present-day cafeteria systems should be further developed for the free-range systems of poultry and pig husbandry. The unavoidable nitrogen excretion from farm animals must be optimised with respect to fertilisation management and operational nitrogen efficiency.
