Collaborative project: Automatic detection of plant diseases with mobile devices and mobile internet for the targeted use of agricultural decision support systems - subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2815411010
Contract period: 01.06.2012 - 31.05.2015
Budget: 100,542 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Goal is to shoot symptoms on sugar beet leaves with the help of cameras in mobile devices (smart phones, cell phones, etc.), to transfer pictures over the internet to a server, to analyze pictures by detection routines (algorithms) and to send the result back. First step is to detect possible disease symptoms on leafs by color and pattern recognition on the photographs. On the basis of a library containing disease pictures results will be sent to the user. So it can compare similar forms of the disease directly. After determination of the disease (s) the users will be able to provide its GPS location. With reference to other geo- and plot specific data the recommendation portal ISIP(www.isisp.de) , which is supported by the crop protection services of German countries offers advices for disease treatments on plants. In the last year of the project is planned to investigate the applicability of the method to leaf diseases in cereals. The result will be a modular detection algorithm that can adapt quickly and easily to other leaf diseases. By the partners INRES and BI-T, an algorithm is created that recognizes leaf diseases on plants on the basis of images given by smartphones. ZEPP will create tools which to run algorithms routinely on smatphones and servers. ZEPP provides tools in agricultural practice and co-ordinates the project. ISIP implements and operates the tools on its web servers.
