Contract period: 01.10.2012
- 30.04.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
The WP ‘Adapting to water scarcity, uncertainty, and the effect of changing climate patterns – coping strategies and their impacts’ takes a landscape approach to water scarcity and looks at how water resources in valleys can provide a solution to improve the resilience of the SES towards the effects of climate change. In the Sudan savanna zone, the uplands are extensively used for rainfed agriculture, which is frequently jeopardized by irregularities in the onset and progression of the rainy season. Valleys in contrast, particularly those of first and second stream orders, provide a range of coping strategies which make use of the greater availability and accessibility of water resources, and their being less affected by dry spells. The use options available in valleys are inland valleys, shallow groundwater, and storage through small reservoirs. This WP addresses how land use and land cover influence the functioning of these systems through their analysis in a false chronosequence of land use intensity, and seeks to understand the dynamics of water availability under different climate conditions in order to assess their suitability as adaption options. Finally, the impact of further development of valley water resources will be assessed.
