Contract period: 01.02.2013 - 31.03.2016
Budget: 174,920 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Cultivar resistance to Cercospora leaf spot is one of the most efficient options to control the most important disease of sugar beet. The resistance reaction of breeding lines / sugar beet germplasm to infections by Cercospora beticola will be investigated by using a hyperspectral imaging sensor system. The objectivation and automation of plant phenotyping which results in much more information on the plant phenotype than visual disease assessment is likely to become an important tool for practical breeding for disease resistance in crops. The non-invasive technical sensor system will help to optimize the process of resistance breeding, especially the identification of valuable resistance sources. Investigations under controlled conditions are likely to demonstrate that optical sensor systems are able to detect and to differentiate typical resistance reactions of sugar beet genotypes varying from hypersensitive reaction to a delay in pathogenesis / reduction of disease severity. The use of sensor systems for the characterization of disease symptoms will result in an automation of the screening systems for disease resistance in crops in the foreseeable future. Partner KWS SAAT AG conducts field experiments for the assessment of resistance of sugar beet genotypes to Cercospora resistance. This information is used for the validation of hyperspectral measurements on the disease development of Cercospora leaf spot disease on the leaf level conducted by INRES - Phytomedicine.
