In view of global developments, the assessment of economic efficiency is increasingly gaining importance. Until now, such assessments have primarily been based on mean comparisons which, however, provide only limited information. Overcoming these limitations requires the application of state of the art methods of efficiency analyses (Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA), which aim at determining the production frontier, associated with a certain technology via statistical analyses, and define indicators of technical and economic efficiency in relation to this production frontier. The ob-jective of the proposed project therefore is to develop and implement the methodology for analysing the efficiency of the dairy sector in NRW. This is possible, because the farm level data collected by the Landwirtschaftskammer NRW provides a unique database for analyses of this nature. The resulting assessment concept will greatly enhance the information value of business analyses. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with the Landwirtschaftskammer NRW.
