Project code: REFORDAT-174, II-A 1 F 41.2013.01
Contract period: 01.05.2013 - 30.04.2015
Budget: 84,554 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Related to the actual discussion of global warming, decreasing fossil energy reserves, dependence on foreign power supply and fluctuating, rising prices for energy following questions will be discussed intensively in livestock production: • Which renewable energy sources could be used more often in livestock technology in the future? • How is it possible to heat livestock buildings with renewable energy or to cool down the plants during summertime? • Which realistic contribution for conservation of energy could be achieved from renewable energy sources? • Which realistic power could be achieved from regenerative technologies in addition with increasing energy efficiency in practical long-term investigations? • Which durable and rodent resistant thermal insulations are available for livestock buildings? Is it, referring to this, possible to insulate livestock buildings additional? Therefore the investigations shall assess different practical conceptions for the use of renewable energy sources already in place. By this it is ensured to obtain actual and realistic data to estimate the capability of renewable heating and cooling technologies. With regard to a high efficiency of energy use in barns, an evaluation of different thermal insulations applied in praxis will be performed by infrared thermography investigations focusing on the suitability and durability of the proposed materials within high temperature barns. Supported by the Chamber of Agriculture of NRW the required investigations will be performed in typical animal houses. Long term measurements (in the course of one season) shall deliver reliable data regarding the examined technology. In at least three stables applying renewable heating and cooling systems and commonly used thermal insulations comparative long term investigations of heating and cooling capability and transmission heat losses due to the building have to carried out. The results shall be used for scientific publications, for consultancy and for education.
