Research on genetic predisposition of pigs against PRRS (Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome)
Project
Project code: REFORDAT-178, II-A 1 F 41.2013.05
Contract period: 01.05.2013
- 30.04.2015
Budget: 82,994 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is the most important disease affecting swine industry worldwide, causing significant economic losses each year. Moreover, it is very difficult to control this disease due to persistence of infection and spreading through verity of routes. Therefore it is important to initiate steps for genetic improvement of pigs against this disease. PRRSV affects macrophage and causes severe respiratory and reproductive form of disease in pig. That is why; goal of this project is to transcriptome (mRNA) and proteome (protein) study of macrophage especially alveolar macrophage in response to PRRSV to find out the genes and proteins playing vital role in the pathogenesis of disease. For this purpose, alveolar macrophage from pigs of different ages will be collected and will be cultured in lab under standard condition and will be infected with PRRSV as in vitro model. Finally, transcriptome and proteome study will be preformed to unravel the genetics behind this disease.
