Project code: BfR-PRS-02-1322-239
Contract period: 01.03.2005 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research

Consumers may be exposed to various chemicals when using cosmetics or when they come in skin contact with special commodities. For substances relevant because of systemic toxicity, data on skin penetration are essential for risk assessment. For selected substances (azo dyes and aromatic amines) therefore skin penetration shall be investigated in a model using pig skin. Data on skin penetration are essential for risk assessment for ingredients of cosmetic products as well as for ingredients of commodities which comes in contact with the human skin. These information exist only in the minority of cases. The in vitro assay established last year in our lab shall be used and adopted to investigate further substances and products. Therefore, analytical methods have to be validated. Additionally, three dimensional human full skin models or reconstructed human epidermis shall be investigated and compared to porcine skin regarding penetration capabilities. The aim is to improve transfer of data on in-vitro skin penetration to humans.
