Purpose of research: Applied research

This project aims to explore the significance of root system variation in barley in achieving sustainable supply of water and nutrients under drought conditions. Till now, the genetic potential of root system variation has not been utilized for sustainable development and the present breeding efforts are mainly focused to improve yield by supplying optimal water and nutrients which overshadowed cultivar’s abilities to perform under diverse conditions. For the proposed project, we have established a mapping population comprising 25 cultivars of barley core-collection from NRW and 98 wild accessions adapted to diverse conditions of the world. A state of the art method, association mapping will be adopted which has the power to dissect complex quantitative traits in diverse-massive populations without making their conventional crosses. A newly developed marker technique (SNP - chip array, 7000 DNA markers) will be utilized to calculate a high resolution marker trait associations which is expected to reveal the QTLs/gene regions for root system variation and drought stress tolerance in barley. A short term goal will be to discover suitable varieties among the NRW core-collection which has optimal root system for drought adaption. Further, it is expected to bring out evidence and knowledge of QTLs/genes associated to root related drought stress tolerance. A long-term aim of this project is to identify useful allelic variation of wild accessions and transfer these natural resources to cultivated varieties of barley.
