Conservation of genetic resources of Vitis vinifera L. by innovative sustainable use of historical varieties in the vineyards of Saxony and Saale-Unstrut
Project
Project code: 2810BM028
Contract period: 01.06.2013
- 31.12.2016
Budget: 5,084 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The project aims at the long-term conservation and use of authothonous cultivars and clones of Vitis vinifera L which are partly endangered by extinction. In addition to the preservation of genetic diversity the biochemical diversity will be conserved. Vineyards in Saale-Unstrut and Saxony will be screened for historical varieties. They will be selected based on the content of presumed health benefits, polyphenol content, disease resistances, molecular genetic relationships. Simultaneously viruses will be eliminated from promising plant material in order to establish model vineyards. These vineyards will serve for demonstration, for conservation of the varieties / clones and also for supply of planting material to other interested vine growers. For the winemakers in the wine regions, a unique feature is the introduction of utochthonous grapevine cultivars. With the pilot project procedural regulations will be created which can be transferred and used in other wine regions for cultivation of their historical varieties.
