Project code: REFORDAT-186, II-A 1 F 41.2013.13
Contract period: 14.03.2013 - 31.03.2014
Budget: 58,200 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The perception of the current pig farming methods by consumers is often heavily influenced by interest-driven representations from the media. Video recordings from the stables, which cover on one hand the housing conditions and investigate on the other hand the behavior of animals over long periods, are a promising approach to obtain a genuine opinion of the consumer to livestock husbandry. The project aims to contribute to the dialogue between agricultural research, agricultural practices and other social forces. Suitable video material shall first be compiled. Then studies of evaluation criteria as well as the acceptance of different accounting procedures - from a consumer perspective will be carried out. As a methodology, focus group discussions with consumers and farmers, experiments on the effects of video sequences and a standardized online survey with integrated video sequences are planned. From these results, recommendations and dialogue approaches between pig farmers, agricultural extension services and policymakers can be derived.
