Development of an imputation procedure for increased groundwater recharge through forest management to aid groundwater retention in view of a decreasing groundwater supply as a consequence of climate change. A project in the private forest of the eastern Lüneburger Heide in Lower Saxony (WASSERWALD)

Project

Project code: 28WS401301
Contract period: 01.01.2014 - 31.12.2015
Budget: 200,752 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The purpose of the project is to sustainably increase the groundwater recharge below woodland and thereby achieve an improvement in the regional water balance, which is under stress. Preventative measures to increase the groundwater reserves are to be taken, in order to meet the increase in demand for groundwater in the region. There is an urgent need for action, particularly because there is currently a situation involving forestry activities evolving that is putting further stress on the land water balance. This is because the current – historically deter-mined – very high proportion of pine forests in need of management are increasingly being underplanted with Pseudotsuga (Douglas fir). When considered in connection with the strategy to secure the land water balance, this is causing a continuous reduction in potential.
