In Germany grapevine is grown on 1% of German agricultural area. On this area a large amount fungicides is sprayed and needs to be reduced for a sustainable viticulture. This goal can be achieved best by growing fungus resistant grapevine cultivars. Their development, however, is very time consuming requiring more than 20 years. By using marker assisted selection (MAS) the efficiency of selection in grapevine breeding programs could be increased considerably. In order to further improve MAS applications in grapevine breeding techniques are to be established for high throughput (HT) phenotyping. Therefore, in an interdisciplinary approach PHENOvines will focus on the development of tools to accelerate grapevine breeding by HT-phenotyping.
As plant material one mapping population and a set of different varieties will be used for training the phenotyping system for yield traits (berry size, berries per cluster, clusters per cane) and mildew resistance. For phenotyping a robot with a camera system will be constructed which should run autonomously based on GPS coordinates through the vineyard to monitor yield and phytosanitary status. Applications will be run in vineyards of a cooperative and on vines of the grapevine repository of JKI Geilweilerhof to be phenotyped for yield parameter. On the medium term HT-phenotyping will be done several times a year to monitor the dynamics of pathogen attack.
