Project code: JKI-RS-08-3350
Contract period: 01.01.2004 - 30.06.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

A fast and effective youth growth of cereals is of great importance especially for ecological farming (fast suppression of weeds, effective nitrogen acquisition in springtime). For this, root system plays an important role which was little investigated so far. By means of methods of image analysis recent cultivars, land races and other genetic resources of barley (Hordeum vulgare) and wheat (Triticum sp.) will be evaluated regarding root development, but also shoot development in their youth stage using pot trials as well as trials under field-like conditions. Stress factors as drought, chilling and nutrient supply are taken into consideration. The project serves the evaluation of genetic resources of cereals with the aim of detection and characterization of sources of abiotic stress tolerances and theimprovement of competitiveness of organic farming by characterization of cereal genotypes with fast youth growth (weed suppression, nutrient uptake). This is a contribution to a sustainable farming system.
