Project code: 2811HS008
Contract period: 01.07.2012 - 31.10.2014
Budget: 109,039 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

The increasing number of conflicts between agrarian and non-agrarian population in rural areas are depending on the differences in settlement and agricultural structures. The study aims to document the existing demands of the rural population towards a multi-functional agriculture and to analyze the extent, the imaginations of the non-agrarian ones can be matched by the contemporary management of farms. Conflicts which occur at the research villages will be described and analyzed related to the opportunities for conflict management. As a result the linkage between agriculture and village, the specific development of the single villages and the path of development under the perspective of a shrinking relevance of agriculture are described. Development potential of farms and agribusiness will be shown up. For that the individual target / decision systems of farmers and their pattern of action in the research villages will be analyzed as well as individual farm-related networks of a few selected farmers, who were able to diminish and stand the conflicts. A research design based on triangulation by combining face-to-face interviews, written interview, expert interviews, episodic, problem centered and focus interviews is set into practice. Focus group discussions with peasant groups, village inhabitants and representatives of nature conservationists, eco farmers etc. will be conducted as well to uncover group specific attitudes concerning agricultural conflicts. In a few of the research villages, located in regions of animal husbandry or wine growing, more conflicts are expected. While the surveys differentiate into farmers and non-farmers, episodic and focused interviews are conducted with farmers, who constructed recently a pig house. Focus group discussions with local and regional experts will be used to cross check the recommendations given after analyzing the empirical material at the end of the research process.
