New plant production systems with autonomous agricultural machinery
Project
Project code: 2814NA004
Contract period: 01.03.2015
- 31.08.2017
Budget: 182,228 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research
Basis for the project is the awareness about increasing application of technology in agriculture is associated with bigger machinery and rising utilization of pesticides. Therby, productional limits are reached and sociopolitical declines in acceptance. Main problems are the rising soil pressure due to the heavy machinery, increasing resistances with respect to pesticides and furthermore the environmental pollution especially based on fertilization with nitrogen. At the same time, new developments in the field of automation lead to establish fully-automated production systems in agriculture. An automated plant production system might reduce the problems named above radically and would guide to a sustainable land management. However, there are different ways of development in the region of automation in cultivation beginning from autonomous small machinery to heavy machinery and also the combination of both. Which path finally is pursued is open, whereby scopes for setting the direction for the agricultural and technology policy are opened. To develop long term plant production systems which are sustainable and correspond with the aim of organic farming, it is necessary to estimate the plant cultivation, technological and economical advantages and disadvantages of each alternative path. The aim is to point up the most favorable path for the usage of autonomous agricultural machinery and to establish a research cluster 'digital farming'.
