Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1271
Contract period: 01.01.2013 - 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research

The project is aimed at establishing a carrot cms hydrid system specifically suitable for cultivation in arid environments. Two completely new cms hybrid systems shall be tested, based on wild genotypes of D. c. maritimus and D. c. gadecaei respectively. On the basis of the hybrid combinations between the new cms sources and carrot genotypes preselected as being adapted to the target environment, a heterosis effect with regard to tolerance against abiotic and biotic stress is expected. The development of the new hybrid system in carrot breeding prevents gene erosion and expands the genetic variation. The implementation of the new hybrid system into plant breeding is a useful tool for German plant breeders. Although developed for carrot breeding in the first place, the project provides the necessary scientific groundwork for adopting this new system for other crops as well. Not least - their use in seed production and a successful market placement provided - the new hybrid system will make a contribution to ensuring the future viability of breeding companies. The referring characterization of the main important ingredients (carbohyrates, carotinoids and polyacetylenes) should be performed by HPLC-reference analysis and vibrational spectroscopic methods, wich have to be newly developped and established first.
