Analysis of the ignition and combustion characteristics of alternative fuels
Project
Project code: BE/14/28 (EW/13/52)
Contract period: 01.09.2013
- 30.06.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
Test methods currently used for the determination of the ignition quality of fuels are predominantly suitable for conventional compression-ignition fuels. For alternative fuels there isn’t any accepted test procedure with regard to modern high pressure injection systems. To develop fuel independent testing methods for common-rail injection a new measurement device with a constant volume combustion chamber can be used.
The project aims to analyze ignition and combustion characteristics of several alternative fuels using the AFIDA (Advance Fuel Ignition Delay Analyzer) measurement instrument. Thereby a test method for determining the ignition quality of vegetable oils as fuel shall be developed. Finally fuel specific engine parameters shall be derived for optimized efficiency and emissions.
