Endocrine effects of perfluorinated compounds (PFAS)
Project
Project code: BfR-LMS-08-1322-661
Contract period: 01.03.2016
- 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
Perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) are used for the fabrication of surface coatings with water- and dirt-repellent properties. The reference compounds perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorosulfanoic acid (PFOS) were classified as reprotoxic (CMR) substances and as persistent to the environment (PBT). As a consequence, the use of PFOS was restricted and in the case of PFOA a restriction program was initiated in 2013. Therefore, the industry is switching to alternative substances, but these substitutes also belong to the class of PFAS. Until now, there are only few toxicological data available for these PFOA and PFOS substitutes. Therefore, this project aims on the generation of toxicological data for these alternative PFAS in comparison to the reference compounds PFOA and PFOS. The project focusses on the molecular modes of action in regard to the endocrine effects of these substances as these effects are also controversially discussed for PFOA and PFOS.
