Development of sour cherry cultivars with pillar growth habit
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-0041
Contract period: 01.01.2009
- 31.12.2011
Purpose of research: Applied research
Sour cherries with pillar growth habit have not been reported in the literature so far. Trees with different growth habit occur occasionally in populations of sour cherry seedlings. The pillar type is characterized by a natural distinctive upright growth habit with shorter internode length, narrow branch angles and a fruit set on short shoots. Genotypes with pillar tree habit were selected in six different sour cherry cross combinations. All these seedlings originated from cross combinations with Hungarian sour cherry cultivars ('Köröser', 'Csengödi', ?Ujferhörtö fürtös'). New cultivars will be selected. The genetic of pillar growth habit and the tree development on different rootstocks should be studied in two selected clones.
Sixteen genotypes with pillar growth habit were selected from seedling populations of six sour cherry cross combinations. Allthese seedlings originated from cross combinations with Hungarian sour cherry cultivars ('Köröser Gierstädt', 'Csengödi', 'Ujfehertoi fürtös'). The pillar type is characterized by a distinctive upright growth habit and narrower branch angles, shorter internodes, and lower number of branches of the second and third order. The flowers and fruits are bome on spurs and short shoots with a high density. A rootstock test showed that growth reduced rootstocks increase the flower and fruit set on spurs on short shoots. lt is therefore recommended growth reduced rootstocks for the growth of columnar varieties to use. Two cultivars, Jachim (F14,12,165) und Boas (DK2,4,101), with good fruit set and fruit characteristics were evaluated as cultivars. Currently these cultivars are in the realization for the Plant Breeder Rights. These both cultivars originated from the cross 'Köröser Gierstädt' x 'Safir'. They are characterised by a good fruit set. The fruits are flat-round and have a dark red colour. The ripening time of the fruits is at the end of July some days before or similar the cultivar 'Schattenmorelle'. The branch angles of both cultivars vary between a half and two-thirds of the branch angles of the parent cultivars. The growth of lateral branches is also apically dominated. The column-shaped sour cherries show an enrichment of the spectrum of sour cherry cultivars and open new possibilities of utilisation in fruit growing.
