Endocrine and DNA-damaging effects of complex mixtures relevant for consumer exposure
Project
Project code: BfR-CPS-08-1322-665
Contract period: 01.01.2016
- 31.12.2017
Purpose of research: Basic research
Commercial products are rarely made out of pure compounds. In consequence consumers will usually be exposed to mixtures of chemical substances rather than the single compounds evaluated toxicologically. One example of such a frequently used chemical cocktail are mineral oils in plastic and cosmetic products. The compounds contained in such oils are potential xenoestrogens and genotoxicants. Therefore this project aims to assess the genotoxic and xenoestrogenic potential of extracts and migrates from plastic products as well as mineral oils used in cosmetic products using a battery of newly established in vitro assays. Further on it will examine if and how the respective compounds influence each other, be it synergistically or antagonistically.
