Project code: TI-WO-08-PID1345
Contract period: 01.01.2001 - 31.12.2020
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Extreme weather events like drought will impact the growth and survival of tree regeneration of our major species in Germany. However, the knowledge about the reaction of young trees to drought and their adaptive capacity is limited. Therefore, experimental research is urgently needed. Our research is aimed at determining the critical limits of drought adaptation in young trees of the major tree species in Germany. In a first step, we are studying different European beech provenances from central and marginal origin in order to assess a possible difference in drought tolerance. In an experimental open field design with eight lysimeters, whose water budgets can be controlled using an automatic roof system, young beech plants are growing either exposed to drought (treatment) or under irrigation regime (control). The response to drought is asssed by measurements of growth (above ground, roots with mini-rhizotrones), of water status (transpiration, plant water potentials), and of photosynthesis (gas exchange). Additional studies are conducted in the greenhouse facilities of the University of Sustainable Development (HNE) at Eberswalde.
