Collaborative project: Development of budget-priced alternatives for drum filters in recirculation aquaculture systems - settleable solid removal in fluidized laminated disc packs - subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2819201115
Contract period: 22.08.2016 - 21.08.2018
Budget: 48,245 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Especially in smaller recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS), which have a high potential for regional production and marketing of fish, drum filters as a component widely used for solids removal in RAS demand for proportionally high investments. The present project aims on the development and performance testing of structurally simple and inexpensive components for the separation of suspended matter and sediments in RAS. The desired method combines the functionality of a vertical flow funnel-like settling tank through integration of a fluidized bed of carrier materials with the advantages of a lamella separator. This innovative process for settleable solid removal will be designed on the one hand for outlets of denitrification reactors in RAS, which are characterized by finely structured suspended solids. Otherwise units designed to handle the removal of faeces and uneaten food from the tank outlets will be dimensioned and brought to market maturity. The Hochschule Konstanz Technik, Wirtschaft und Gestaltung characterizes the structure of the settleable solids in outlets from denitrification reactors and tanks of RAS and models the effective settling surfaces in fluidized carrier materials. The sedimentation of resuspended sediments from RAS in different fluidized carrier beds were investigated. The company Kunststoff- Spranger GmbH designs and constructs funnel-like tanks with fluidized carrier beds for both areas of application in pilot plant and industrial scale. The Institut für Binnenfischerei e.V. Potsdam-Sacrow tests performance and usability of the developed innovative separators among practical conditions for both areas of application.
