FLI - Institute of Diagnostic Virology (FLI - IVD)

Institution

Description

The Institute of Diagnostic Virology studies economically important virus diseases of animals, mainly in terms of diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Special attention is given to notifiable diseases. National reference laboratories for classical swine fever, avian influenza, Newcastle disease, bovine herpesvirus 1-infection, infectious equine anemia, porcine encephalomyelitis, foot and mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, vesicular stomatitis and African swine fever, for bovine viral diarrhoe/mucosal disease as well as for exotic virus diseases of animals such as orbivirus infections or cattle plaque, are part of the institute and have been accredited officially according to ISO/IEC 17025. They conduct applied research and have official duties according to national and European legislation. The laboratories for avian influenza, Newcastle disease and BHV-1 were also confirmed as reference laboratories of the OIE. Furthermore, diagnostic procedures are being developed, improved and evaluated. Commercially available diagnostics are officially tested for licensing, and reagents which are not available commercially are developed and supplied to regional laboratories. In addition, research concerning the prophylaxis and pathogenesis of selected notifiable animal diseases is conducted. The laboratory in charge of the virus collection established at the institute focuses on collection, characterisation, maintenance and delivery of authentic virus strains and appropriate antisera. In addition, the generation of monoclonal antibodies used both within the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and in other diagnostic laboratories is one of the tasks of the institute.
