Reduction of Antibiotic Consumption in Pork Production by Integrating Epidemiologic Information from Consulting Expertise from Clinic, Hygiene, Microbiology and Pharmacology - subproject 4 (VASIB)

Project

Project code: 2817702914
Contract period: 01.10.2016 - 30.09.2018
Budget: 87,880 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to optimize (i) the veterinary consulting process and (ii) the process of decision making with regard to farm management. For this, selected farms with known respiratory disorders in piglet production will be guided by combining diagnostics, optimized treatment strategies as well as a comprehensive consulting service for the farm management to minimise the use of antibiotics. This approach is intended to actively contribute to the overall aim to minimise the development of antibiotic resistance in livestock. To assure this process, a software for use in veterinary practice will be developed and prevalidated, which combines data from epidemiology, preventive veterinary medicine, diagnostic investigations and farm management. Moreover, a database for science- and evidence-based decision making in veterinary interventions will be generated and the development of antibiotic resistance of porcine respiratory tract pathogens will be monitored with respect to the antibiotics used in the participating farms. The proposed project is based on the assumption that reduction of the use of antibiotics for treatment of bacterial infections in pork production is possible only by comprehensive veterinary consulting which takes into account all relevant risk factors playing a role in the onset of the disease. For this, all factors that are important for the prevention of diseases have to be assessed by standardised measures and have to be evaluated in a holistic approach. Therefore, veterinary expertise in the areas of clinical diseases, livestock management, hygiene, pharmacology, antibiotic resistance, microbiology, and epidemiology is indispensable for an efficient and comprehensive consulting service. This expertise has to be organized in a network, which allows continuous access by all users.
