Treated grains of common vetches (Vicia sativa L.) as protein feed for monogastric farm animals in organic agriculture

Project

Project code: 2815OE038
Contract period: 01.03.2017 - 29.02.2020
Budget: 475,253 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim of the project is to process the protein-rich grains of common vetches (Vicia sativa L.) by germination and ensiling, respectively, into a valuable feed for monogastric farm animals in organic agriculture. Common vetches are higher in protein than faba beans and field peas, and due to their minimal habitat requirements, expanding their area of cultivation is desirable. However, the anti nutritional factors (ANFs) present in the raw grains of common vetches limit their possible share in the diets for monogastrics to a very low level. Based on reports about closely related species, the methods of germination and ensiling, respectively, will be assessed with regard to their ability to lower the ANF content and improve the amino acid digestibility of common vetch grains. Feeding trials with broilers, laying hens and young fattening pigs will be conducted in order to evaluate feed the acceptance and achievable animal performance. Complementary cultivation trials will allow recommendations on the choice of cultivar and the partner in intercropping, with special focus on their used as feed for monogastrics. Analyses of nutrient composition and digestibility trials will further produce so far missing knowledge on the common vetch cultivars currently used in Germany and the effect of the treatments on their nutrient composition.
