Collaborative project: Molecular charcterization of different TRV isolates and analysis of the interaction between virus, nematode and potato to improve resistance breeding. Subproject 3 (STEP-4-STEP)

Project

Project code: 2818208115
Contract period: 11.04.2017 - 10.04.2020
Budget: 63,403 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The increasing occurrence of corky ring spot or spraing disease on potato caused by Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) represents a major threat to potato production. TRV is transmitted by plant-parasitic nematodes. There are no pesticides available to control corky ring spot. Therefore, control measures might include agronomic practices (e.g. crop rotation, weed control, planting date) or selection of resistant/tolerant potato genotypes. Prerequisite for choosing the most suitable potato genotype is a good knowledge about the presence of the TRV isolate and the vector species. The research project will characterize the various regional TRV isolates and study the distribution, symptomatology and pathogenicity of TRV and their associated vector nematodes. Breeders aim at a marker-assisted breeding for resistance. Generating phenotypic data from field-grown tubers and comparison with molecular data will form the basis to identify resistant and tolerant cultivars.
