Suitability of Health maintaining Products and Techniques: a Pilot Study in Swine Production
Project
Project code: keine Angabe
Contract period: 01.06.2016
- 31.07.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the 16th novella of the AMG (Arzneimittelgesetz) is to minimize the application of antibiotic therapy in livestock farming. Against this background, in the past few years a huge amount of health-stabilizing products and techniques came into the market. Therefore the aim of the present project is primarily to summarize health-stabilizing products and techniques on the market, and based on literature data to assess the clinical evidence for or against the effectiveness of these products and techniques in swine production. In a second step some of the products and techniques are to be reassessed in practice concerning their suitability for daily use in pig farms. Conceivable are prophylactic approaches such as feeding lactic acid-producing bacteria as used since years in cattle farming for the purpose of establishing a favorable intestinal microflora, or cleaning of barns on the basis of probiotics used as microclimate regulation. In a third step a universal experimental design for future evaluations is to be developed, that facilitates testing new health-stabilizing products and techniques for suitability in livestock farming. In particular, in addition to probiotics, prebiotics, herbs and minerals also acupuncture, homeopathy, bach flower therapy as well as alternative techniques for cleaning barns is used in intensive livestock farming. Consequently an unmanageable conglomeration of well-known and novel techniques and products are available in practice. For pig farmers as well as for veterinarians it is hard, respectively hardly ever, to assess the effectiveness of these techniques and products in intensive livestock farming.
