The aim of the present R&D project is an economic analysis of measures for an optimised nutrient management in organic outdoor vegetable cultivation on farm level and as cooperations between farms. The costs and benefits of these measures are determined for different types of farms using model production systems in order to improve the decision-making basis for nutrient management for the farms. In close cooperation with technical advisors and organic horticultural farms, relevant innovative strategies are identified and the respective economic effects quantified. These results contribute to the identification of factors for the acceptance of measures for an optimised nutrient management for different types of farms, to the identification of barriers to take-over and to the provision of information for efficient and targeted advice. Inter-company approaches to nutrient management and cooperation with companies from other production areas will also be included in the analyses in order to provide participating companies with cost transparency and to identify practicable concepts for regional nutrient cycles. The project results are targeted first and foremost to support farmers and the farm advisors by closing gaps in knowledge on the economic effects of improved nutrient management. The farm level and inter-company potentials of sustainable nutrient management in organic vegetable production can only be fully exploited through thorough economic studies. In addition, the economic results are also relevant for plant cultivation research and the further development of long-term measures to optimise nutrient supply in organic vegetable production. This research project thus offers concrete starting points for practical research networks, e.g. for the NutriNet practical research network.
