Practice guide: diseases and pests in the medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation

Project

Project code: 2806OE118
Contract period: 01.05.2008 - 01.09.2010
Budget: 116,876 Euro
Purpose of research: Public relations

The cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants and ensuring a high quality demand of the plant raw material requires extensive knowledge about the different cultures. The efficient handling with occurring pathogens is of great importance to the cultural success. Until now there is no current reference for the diagnosis of disease and pests of medicinal and aromatic plants which is suitable for practice and consultation. In the accomplished project the University of Bonn in cooperation with its project partners Ökoplant e.V., Julius Kühn-Institut, and Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Forsten Sachsen-Anhalt could create a guide entitled 'Practice guide: diseases and pests in the medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation' in book form as well as on CD-ROM. The practice guide provides support, to identify harmful diseases and pests as early as possible, helps estimating the potential risk for the culture and gives recommendations for effective regulatory measures. At 25 major medicinal and aromatic crops biotic and abiotic causes for plant damages are described and illustrated. Supplementary descriptions of diseases and pests of 25 further cultures and a wealth of additional information are included on an accompanying CD-ROM. The guide targets mainly the producers of medicinal and aromatic plants, particularly organic farmers and gardeners. Furthermore it will be of interest for consultants, researchers as well as inspectors, auditors and traders, because it allows an easy overview of the relevant pathogens. The book with the included CD-ROM is released in the series Spectrum Phytomedizin of the German Phytopathological Society and is available free of charge through Ökoplant e.V. A free electronic version of the book (PDF document) can be downloaded under www.phytomedizin.org (> publications).
