Collaborative project: Nutraceuticals as enhancement for the immune system of flatfish – Subproject 4

Project

Project code: 2817304110
Contract period: 01.03.2012 - 28.02.2015
Budget: 148,829 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

During the production of fish in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS), an enrichment of pathogens and micro-organisms can occur due to low replacement rates of the recirculating water. This increases the risk of diseases outbreaks, which currently are treated by an application of potent antiparasiticals or antibiotics. These treatments often are long lasting, may be of limited success and bear the risk of residues in water or filet. The here proposed research aims at an evaluation of the potential of natural components as feed supplements for an improvement of growth performance and disease resistance of flatfish raised in aquaculture. The results of this research should form a basis for an improved feed formulation for use in the aquaculture of marine flatfish. In an initial phase of the work, several suitable natural substances will be selected and then fed to turbot, starry flounder or sole kept at different, controlled regimes in a RAS. During the feeding experiments, water parameters, growth performance, physiological parameters, gut morphology, gut histochemistry and liver colour will be assessed. In addition, lysozyme activity of the serum and phagocyte activity of head kidney derived leukocytes will be used for monitoring immune parameters of fish under different feeding regimes. The health status will be assessed by examining the fish for the presence of infections with viruses, parasites or bacteria.
