Production processes

Project code: vTI-BW-08-120
Contract period: 01.06.2009 - 31.03.2013
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

A changing global competitive environment and changes in EU common agricultural policy confront the EU crop production with new challenges, but also with promising new opportunities. Rising agricultural price levels as well as the political support of bioenergy increase the opportunity costs for land and thus increase the economic pressure for example on the European sugar beet production. For an estimation of the future sugar beet production in major growing regions it is necessary to gather data on the beet cultivation and the effects influencing their respective production in the best way possible. On the one hand crop specific data from individual farms are needed and on the other hand the non-monetary effects to the beet cultivation shall be gahtered in focus group discussions. The detection of these effects such as the value as preceding crop are of special interest because they cannot be taken from ordinary available cost calculations and they are important determinates for the competitiveness of the crops. Based on the farm individual datasets and the knowledge from the expert discussions the on-farm competitiveness of sugar beets compared to their alternative crops will be analyzed. Thus a realistic picture about possible developments in beet cultivation in the different regions can be made.
