Collaborative project: Analysing and improving the relationship between grassland, animal health and animal breeding in beef suckler cows. Subproject: Analyses of beef suckler cows health and the influencing factors (MuKuGreen)
Project
Project code: 2812NA042
Contract period: 01.10.2014
- 30.09.2017
Budget: 146,597 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of this study is the development of recommendations for the optimal use of pasture with regard to a best possible animal health status and in this way to improve the economic and ecological aspects of permanent grassland. For 18 months, data on the individual health status of four Angus- herds in representative areas of Germany will be assessed. All measures of management and hygiene in relation to the grassland will be documented. All data will be analysed in the context of climate data and evaluations of the grassland qualities performed by the Deutscher Grünlandverband e.V. with the aim to identify the most important risk factors referring to animal health. In the second part of the project, the assessed data will be used to develop health traits for breeding animals highly adapted to grassland farming. To achieve this, the use of the collected health data, also considering the impact of specific grassland locations will be evaluated against the background of the conventional estimation of breeding values.
