Project code: 2819200312, TI-OL-08-PID1663
Contract period: 01.10.2014 - 30.11.2017
Budget: 297,391 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The project's aim was to produce Methionin for organic monogastric feeding in accordance with the Council Regulations EC No 834/2007 and EC No 889/2008 by using Corynebacterium glutamicum type KY 10575. The 3-year-project started in October 2014 and was co-ordinated by the Thiinen lnstitute of Organic Farming in Trenthorst in cooperation with two organic agricultural advisory services and the University Hohenheim as subcontractors. The independent partner e-nema was responsible for the semi-industrial Methionin production based on Corynebacterium glutamicum and organically certified culture media. The Thiinen-lnstitute was responsible for the (i) official authorisation of the Methionin-substrate appropriate to the above mentioned organic Council Regulations (with the assistance of the organic agricultural advisory services), (ii) analytical Methionin determination incl. rapid test development and NIRS methods (in interchange withe nema), (iii) feed value determination for poultry (with the help of University Hohenheim), and (iv) feeding trials with broilers at the Thiinen-lnstitute's research farm (with the help of the organic agricultural advisory services). The proje t's motivation was to provide a 100% organically based precious protein feedstuff with a high level of methionine supply for monogastric livestock nutrition. The project expired prematurely on March 31st, 2017 since no satisfying Methionin concentrations could be attained in threefold repetition. This was a defined precondition to guarantee an economically successful implementation of bacteria protein in organic livestock and a promising production of bacteria protein from Corynebacterium glutamicum.
