Collaborative project: Breeding methodology for exploitation of heterosis in wheat - subproject 19 (ZUCHTWERT)

Project

Project code: 2814605713
Contract period: 01.09.2014 - 15.12.2019
Budget: 74,023 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Hybrid breeding uses heterosis to increase the yield of crops. The increase in the world popu-lation and climatic changes make it necessary to exploit heterosis also for wheat. The ZUCHTWERT project has laid down the breeding methodological basis for hybrid breeding in wheat. This concerns the development of methods for the formation of complementary het-erotic groups with high yields. The world's most comprehensive hybrid wheat data set was jointly elaborated for this purpose. Innovative methods of statistical genomics were developed to analyze the comprehensive data. The results provide wheat hybrid breeders with important new tools to structure their breeding populations into complementary heterotic groups. The ZUCHTWERT project combined partners from science and industry with unique know-how in hybrid breeding, which ensures comprehensive exploitation of the results in the establishment of hybrid wheat breeding.
