Collaborative project: Minimisation of antibiotic use at the beginning of the dry period by automated drying off in the last lactation stage (Autodry) - Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2817601012
Contract period: 01.01.2015 - 31.12.2017
Budget: 168,059 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

In conventional dairy farming a major part of cows will set dry with an antibiotic injector (e.g. drug cloxacillin) at the start of the dry period (6-8 weeks before the expected calving date). In order to reduce the use of antibiotics for the animals with no antibiotic treatment due to medical reasons, a software module will be developed to automatize the cluster removal, which initiates the involution (regression of the mammary gland tissue) before the actual dry period starts. The GEA Farm Technologies GmbH (industrial project partner) has the task of developing the software module for automated initiation of involution as well as the supervision of subsequent application tests. The project partner University of Bonn is responsible for the implementation of scientific application tests and check-ups with cows in the last phase of lactation (including control of udder health and the involution). The experiments will be made at the test farm of teaching and research Frankenforst (Vinxel by Bonn). As there is no comparable software module on the market by now, the market opportunities are classified as high by the applicant. Especially, the increasing focus on the use of antibiotics in livestock increases the marketing value of the new product.
