Investigations on the molecular epidemiology in the wild bird population
Project
Project code: 2813100806
Contract period: 01.09.2006
- 31.08.2009
Budget: 482,407 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Influenza viruses are genetically unstable. Under the selection pressure which results from the composition of a host population (spectrum of affected host species) and from environmental factors (e.g. climate, temperature), a rapid genetic adaptation of the virus must be anticipated. Data from Asia show that genetic modifications occur in H5N1 infected wild bird populations. Such processes must also be anticipated in Germany. Molecular biological investigations revealing modifications of the virus are indispensable to detect adaptation processes of the virus to the specific conditions in Central Europe and to gain insights into the course of infection chains in the wild bird / wildlife populations.
