Investigations of the resistance of strawberry (Fragaria) against Xanthomonas fragariae, the causal organism of Angular Leaf Spot Disease
Project
Project code: JKI-RS-08-2363
Contract period: 01.07.2005
- 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research
Bacterial diseases leading to considerable reductions in yield and quality cannot be controlled by chemical means. In strawberry, Angular Leaf Spot Disease caused by Xanthomonas fragariae has gained evident importance, recently. Therefore, this project, which is carried out in collaboration with the gene bank of the Institute of Fruit Breeding Dresden-Pillnitz possesing the largest collection of Fragaria-genotypes in Europe, aims at identifying resistant germplasms that can be recommended for cultivation in infested fields or can be the starting point for breeding for resistance. Assuming a further spreading of the disease, the availability of resistant cultivars is a prerequisite for ensuring strawberry cultivation.
