Institute of Bio-and Food Technology Area II: Technical Biology
Institution
Section overview
Description
Technical Biology is an important area in Biotechnolgy. It is involved in the technical application of biological systems or parts of them for the synthesis or conversion of bioproducts. The application of biological systems include, for example, bacteria, yeasts, fungi and algae (Microbial Biotechnology), plant, animal and human cell cultures (Cell Culture Techniques), as well as isolated peptides and proteins, their downstream processing and technical application (Enzyme Technology, Biocatalysis, Biosensoring).
Technical Biology is characterized by its strong impact on industrial applications as well as by its interdisciplinarity and close connection between the fields of biology, chemistry and engineering. Additionally (bio)informatics have gain strong importance since the early 1990ies, when the first complete microbial genome sequences were published, by the use of data banks containing gene and protein sequence informations.
