Establishing a library of barley introgression lines (ILs) carrying chromosomal segments from Hordeum bulbosum
Project
Project code: JKI-ZL-08-3189
Contract period: 01.10.2013
- 30.11.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research
The wild species Hordeum bulbosum possesses a variety of valuable disease-resistance genes, which make it a potential genetic resource for resistance breeding in barley. With regard to agronomic traits, though, the genetic potential of H. bulbosum has not yet been investigated. A stable interspecific H. bulbosum × H. vulgare hybrid was developed that can be used for constructing a library of introgression lines (ILs). The goal of the project is to generate a set of ILs that represents a large part of the H. bulbosum genome. The introgressed wild barley segments have to be genetically fixed using anther culture. A set of ILs shall be selected which will be assessed in their contribution to agronomic performance. Using tightly linked molecular markers these ILs might then be used for combining and transferring genes of interest into elite cultivars.
