Development of practical strategies for the regulation of cicadas in the ecological and medicinal plant cultivation Seasonings outdoors and under glass
Project
Project code: 2806OE033
Contract period: 01.06.2007
- 31.12.2009
Budget: 491,543 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the project is the development of a control concept for leafhoppers in medicinal herbs and spices, which is suited for the practice. Next to a status quo-analysis and the drafting of basic knowledge on the pest complex (taxonomic identification, determination of biological characteristics, population dynamics), the correlation between the extent of infestation and the quality of the produce will be investigated. Control strategies comprise testing of various mechanical, cultivational chemical and biological methods for the reduction of the pests, both in lab and field experiments. The information resulting from this research will be published and provided for extension services and growers. Laboratory rearing systems of different leafhopper species were established and various biological, cultural and mechanical control methods have been tested under laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions.
