Collaborative project: Application of plasma technology for gentle preservation of perishables in the post-harvest chain – Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2816303207
Contract period: 15.10.2009
- 15.10.2012
Budget: 81,383 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Production and processing of fresh fruits and vegetables require efficient, rapid and safe sanitization measures. The economic losses in perishable production due to deterioration are considerably high. Among the most frequent reasons are the microbial contamination affecting the products all through the processing chain, i.e. from field to retail. Also, contaminated products lead to consumer health risks. In the R&D consortium, FriPlas partners from research and industry are on track in developing a cold plasma based process technology for post-harvest disinfection of fruit and vegetables. This technology in combination with an online detection system aid to boost the quality and safety/shelf life of the fresh produce. Participation and collaboration with industry enhances the innovation potential of the project and a quick transfer of the new process technology into practise is envisaged.
